The Wells Fargo Building was built in Downtown Portland in 1972 and stood as the city's (and state's) tallest building, a record that stands (so to speak) today.
At 546 ft tall, it's about ten feet taller than the US Bank building ("Big Pink") on Burnside.
In 2016, though, the Portland Development Commission sought opinions on how to develop space at the former US Post Office location in the Pearl District.
One architectural firm proposed a pair of towers that would stand 900 ft into the sky, connected by a walkway.
These would have absolutely dominated the Portland skyline, but they weren't in the final 3 options considered by the Commission.
One reason is that Portland tends to steer away from TALL buildings. Also, and tied back to the first, zoning in the area only allowed buildings up to 400 ft, which would have made 900 ft a pretty tall (pun intended) request.
