Is it Time to Add a Castle to Your Porfolio?

It’s not often you see a medieval castle on the market in the Sunshine State—but one very unique home is out to change that, albeit with a quirky modernist twist.
Located in Monticello, about 30 miles northeast of Tallahassee, this three-bedroom fortress boasts a “captivating design,” oddly sized windows, curved walls, a secret room, and even a whale-shaped concrete garage, according to the listing. It’s now available for the royal sum of $1.59 million.

“It was originally owned by a professor of historic architecture who designed the castle located at 193 Nautilus Drive and a round building [also on the market] at 178 Nautilus Drive,” says listing agent Ondrea Maldonado, of Joe Manausa Real Estate.
Built in 1987, this 9,848-square-foot home has undergone extensive updates over the past 15 years and now offers a layout perfect for large-scale entertaining.
“It was a derelict building when the sellers bought it,” Maldonado says. “They had to renovate everything to make it their home. They took out two different walls and installed sliding glass doors. They did the windows, floors, walls, painting, appliances, and completely renovated the interior and exterior.
“They put so much time and effort into it. Their daughter moved to Virginia, so they are relocating there to be closer to their granddaughter.”
The main residence features a sleek kitchen with modern cabinets, an oversized island with bar seating, and a wet bar. The library is lined with built-in shelves that can hold 10,000 books. According to the listing, 6,000 books will convey with the sale.

The upper-level primary suite is highlighted by a walk-in closet as well as direct access to a 2,000-square-foot rooftop patio.
“The primary suite has two bathrooms and from her bathroom, there is a spiral staircase that leads up to a claw-foot tub. When you are looking at the house from the outside, the pointy tower has the bathroom,” says Maldonado.
The living area is a five-star space worthy of a big bucket of popcorn.
“The living room is essentially a giant 2,100-square-foot screening room with projector screen,” she notes.

“There is also an additional kitchen and bar area there along with a laundry setup and bathroom. What is really unique is there is a staircase in the screening room that takes you to a small hidden room.”
What the next owner decides to do with the castle’s covert space is completely up to them.
The 32-acre spread includes a guest cottage with a full bathroom and kitchenette along with a pond and dock. Several outbuildings, including chicken, potting, and mushroom sheds are also located on the property along with a greenhouse and creek.
And in addition to the whimsical whale-shaped garage, there are two carports and a new three-bay garage with a workshop.
It can be yours for just $1.69 million (at the time of this post).
